Learning for Life - Whāia te mātauranga kei tua

Putaruru College provides opportunities for students to pursue their interests in a diverse range of activities. Our young people have creative talents that can be developed through:

Digital Video Technology

Putaruru College has enjoyed tremendous success in Digital Video Production over the last few years beginning with winning the 2012 Fair Go National Secondary School Ad Awards and making the finals in 2014, and continue with success and many other major prizes. Our talented students get to learn and work with Industry Standard equipment and the latest relevant technology within a dedicated production room on many exciting projects throughout the year guaranteed to get their creative juices flowing. This includes live streaming assemblies etc.

Maori Culture

Putaruru College students can expand their cultural awareness and knowledge through participation in Kapa Haka. The group supports college assemblies and other activities.

Japanese Cultural Exchanges

For the past few years we have been honoured to host several Japanese schools who are visiting New Zealand on a cultural exchange. The visits take place several times a year and are really enjoyed by our students. The Japanese students arrive to a traditional Powhiri welcome then rotate around the school learning the haka and stick games and teaching our students origami and Japanese songs. We are Facebook friends with a lot of ex visitors who really seem to embrace the Kiwi experience.

Music

Tuition is available for a variety of musical instruments via our Itinerant music teachers who come here to teach free of charge. There are many opportunities for performing such as Achievers Assemblies and Prizegivings. Students can also join the Putaruru School of Music for a small charge. These are lessons that take place after school.

Business Experience

The College hosts MaiBiz each year a 3 day business programme where groups of Year 12 students pit their entrepreneurial skills against each other vying to see who can come up with the best marketable product and take out the challenge.

Other activities offered include:

Chess, debating, discos, forestry expo, school camps, sports camps, South Waikato News Challege, Tangaroa challenge, Tough Guy and Gal challenge, Tongariro tramp, Young Enterprise Scheme
