A1 LEARNING SUPPORT
A1 is a safe, welcoming space designed to support students with learning disabilities, behavioural needs, and those who benefit from extra awhi in their school day. This room includes a full kitchen, lounge area, and classroom, creating a homely and flexible environment where students can learn and thrive. It is also home to our SENCO team, who run the Breakfast Club, provide community meals, and help support students throughout the day. A1 is a calm, inclusive space where neurodivergent students can relax, reset, and engage in play-based learning too, supported by a caring team of teacher aides. It’s a hub of love, belonging, and connection for those who need it most.
HEALTH CENTRE
The Health Centre is a safe and supportive space dedicated to student wellbeing. Our onsite team includes a nurse, doctor, counsellors, and youth workers, who are available to help with both physical and mental health needs. The Student Services team works closely with students and families to provide guidance, referrals, and extra care when needed. Whether it’s a check-up, a listening ear, or help managing stress, our Health Centre is here to support every student’s overall wellbeing throughout their school journey.
LIBRARY
The Library is a vibrant and flexible space that supports both learning and wellbeing. It is managed with the help of our dedicated student librarians and Ms Spencer. This space includes an archive room and digital Chromebooks available for student use. The library hosts a variety of activities, including professional learning sessions for staff, quiet reading zones, board games, meetings, and study sessions. Every student has access to loan books independently and is given time during class to visit the library. Whether it’s for research, reading, or relaxing, the library is a valued space for both students and staff.
GYMNASIUM
The Gymnasium is a well-equipped space designed to support a wide range of physical activities. It features a full indoor court with basketball hoops, making it a popular area for PE classes, sports training, and recreational games. Alongside the main court, the gym also includes a workout area fitted with exercise equipment and weights machines, allowing students to build strength and fitness in a safe and supervised environment. The gym is an essential part of our commitment to student wellbeing and physical development.
SPORTS TURF
The Sports Turf is a modern, multi-purpose sports turf that caters to a variety of sports, including netball, basketball, kī-o-rahi, hockey, tennis, and paddleball. During interval and lunchtime, students can hire sports equipment from the Sports Coordinator to enjoy active play and friendly games on the turf. It’s a popular and inclusive space that encourages physical activity and student connection. The turf is also open to the general public outside of school hours, making it a valuable facility for the wider Putāruru community.
HALL
The Hall is a central space for gathering, celebrating, and learning. It is used regularly for weekly assemblies, performances, school exams, STARS Teina sessions, and student achievement celebrations. The hall also hosts major events such as the school ball and community gatherings. With a full stage, projector, seating, and tables, it is well-equipped for a variety of school-based activities. The hall comfortably fits the entire school when seated, making it a vital space for connection and school-wide events.
DIGITAL CLASSROOMS
Our Digital Classrooms are designed to prepare students for a technology-rich future. Each room is equipped with Chromebooks, digital screens, and reliable internet access to support interactive and blended learning. Students are encouraged to build their digital literacy through a variety of platforms, including Google Workspace tools. These classrooms support collaborative learning, creative thinking, and real-world problem-solving across many subject areas.
CAREERS/PATHWAYS
The Careers and Pathways Hub at Putāruru College supports students in exploring future opportunities beyond school. Whether students are interested in university, trades, apprenticeships, or entering the workforce, our dedicated team offers personalised guidance. The space is used for careers interviews, visiting speakers, workshops, and planning sessions, helping every student design a pathway that aligns with their skills, interests, and aspirations. We also offer the Gateway programme, which allows students to gain real-world experience in the workplace while still at school, building practical skills and confidence in their chosen field.
PAVILION
The Pavilion is a well-used facility located near our sports fields, offering a space for team gatherings, sports events, health and PE classes, and outdoor education preparation. It provides shelter, seating, and access to equipment storage and acts as a base for sports training sessions and community use. The Pavilion reflects our school’s commitment to supporting active lifestyles and community involvement.
CANTEEN
Our school canteen is a welcoming and busy hub during break times. It provides nutritious food options for students, including meals supported through our school lunches programme, FREE school lunches subsidised by the Government. Operated with student wellbeing in mind, the canteen team works closely with the SENCO and A1 team to ensure that all students have access to kai, including those with dietary requirements, during the school day.
MUSIC ROOM
The Music and Drama Rooms are creative spaces where students can express themselves through performance and sound. The Music room is home to itinerant music lessons, group practices, and our talented school band, which performs at events like Rockquest. The Drama room is currently being utilised by the Health and PE department so it is set up as a classroom. We hope to offer Drama as a subject soon.
HORTICULTURE GARDENS
The Horticulture Gardens provide a hands-on, outdoor learning environment where students can develop practical skills in gardening, sustainability, and plant care. This space is used by horticulture classes to grow vegetables, herbs, and flowers while learning about soil health, garden maintenance, and seasonal planting. It also supports cross-curricular learning in science, food technology, and wellbeing. The gardens promote teamwork, responsibility, and connection to the environment, giving students a sense of pride and achievement as they see the results of their work grow.
