English is an important subject at Putāruru College that helps students build strong reading, writing, speaking, and thinking skills. Students learn how to understand and enjoy different types of texts, such as novels, short stories, poems, films, and media. They also get to express their own ideas clearly through writing and speaking. The subject encourages creativity, confidence, and clear communication.
In the senior years (Years 11–13), English is part of NCEA. Students can earn credits through a mix of writing, reading, speaking, and exams. At Level 1, students can gain up to 20 credits through tasks like writing portfolios, reading texts closely, and giving speeches. At Level 2, students can earn around 18–20 credits, with more focus on analysing texts and improving writing. Level 3 offers around 18–20 credits as well, with more in-depth work that helps prepare students for university or work. Courses are designed to support all learners and help them succeed.
