GOOGLE CLASSROOM | AKOMANGA KŪKARA

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR STUDENTS?

Each student is assigned a secure Google account, which gives them access to a suite of cloud-based tools tailored for education. These tools allow students to:

  • Work on documents, presentations, and assignments from any device
  • Collaborate with classmates on shared projects
  • Receive feedback from teachers in real-time
  • Stay organised with digital calendars and to-do lists

Student accounts are part of our Putāruru College domain, which means email and document sharing is typically restricted to school staff and students, keeping communication focused and secure. Teachers regularly monitor Google Classroom activity and student correspondence to ensure responsible use and a safe digital learning environment.

SUPPORTING DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP

Digital literacy and online safety are core to our values. All students must agree to and follow our Cyber Safety Responsible Use Agreement. We teach students how to be respectful, responsible digital citizens, reinforcing key expectations such as:

  • Keeping login details secure
  • Using their Google account for schoolwork only
  • Communicating respectfully online
  • Following guidelines for sharing and collaborating

We encourage parents and whānau to talk with their children about online behaviour and stay involved in their digital learning. While internet activity is filtered and monitored at school, home use of devices is not, so we recommend open conversations about expectations and possibly using parental controls or monitoring tools at home.

ENHANCING TEACHING AND LEARNING

Google Workspace is a powerful tool for teaching and learning:

  • Teachers can provide personalised feedback and guide students through next steps using digital comments and suggestions
  • Groups of students can collaborate on documents and presentations at the same time—no more waiting for "their turn"
  • Work started in class can be accessed and completed at home, supporting continuous learning and project-based education

Learning no longer stops at the classroom door. With Chromebooks and Google tools, Putāruru College students are prepared for a future where digital skills, flexibility, and collaboration are essential. We're committed to helping every learner succeed in a connected world.
