SCIENCE | PŪTAIAO
Science at Putāruru College inspires students to understand the world around them. Science encourages curiosity, problem-solving, and critical thinking through practical and theoretical learning.
In the junior school, students investigate a range of topics across Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Earth and Space Science.
Year 11 Science is designed to give students choice and flexibility, allowing them to select topics that match their interests and tailor their course to suit their preferred balance of internal and external assessment. It also equips students with the foundational skills and knowledge needed to succeed if they choose to specialise in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics at NCEA Level 2. To support the student-centred approach, classes change each term based on student choice; as a result, students may work with different teachers throughout the year.
Year 12 and 13 students may choose to continue taking a General Science course and/or specialise in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. These courses offer 15 - 20 credits and allow students to explore topics like plants and animals, mechanics, organic chemistry, atomic structure and bonding, socio-scientific issues, and environmental systems. Through these studies, students develop skills in investigation, data analysis, and scientific communication, which are valuable in careers such as engineering, health sciences, conservation, and technology.
Extracurricular activities to extend Science learning beyond the classroom include participation in the annual Kiwi Science Competition for Year 7 - 10 students and EPro 8 Challenge for Year 9 - 13 students.
