SUPPORT |  ĀWHINA

At Putāruru College, we are committed to supporting the well-being and success of every student, both in and out of the classroom. Our A1 department provides dedicated learning support for students with learning needs or disabilities, alongside a team of teacher aides who assist with classroom learning. We have a fully staffed Health Centre on-site, which includes a nurse, doctor, counsellors, and youth workers available to support students’ physical and mental well-being.

Students are also supported by our Pou Ārahi (Deans) and Whānau Teachers, who offer more one-on-one care and help guide students through personal or academic challenges. Whether it’s learning difficulties, social concerns, or personal issues involving staff or peers, we have a strong support system in place for both students and their families. At Putāruru College, no student or whānau ever has to face challenges alone.

LEARNING SUPPORT

At Putāruru College, we are committed to supporting every learner to reach their full potential. Our Learning Support team offers a range of services tailored to meet individual needs, including access to our dedicated A1 Learning Centre, where students can receive one-on-one or small group support. We also run Study and Chill sessions—a relaxed and supportive space for students to catch up on work, receive extra help, or simply reset in a calm environment. Whānau teachers play a key role in guiding and mentoring students, often providing additional academic support and checking in on wellbeing. Our team of Teaching Aides also work alongside classroom teachers to ensure students have the assistance they need to succeed in their learning journey.

HEALTH CENTRE

Our Student Support and Health Centre at Putāruru College is a safe and welcoming space where students can access a range of wellbeing services. From physical health needs to emotional support, our dedicated team is here to help students navigate challenges and maintain their overall wellbeing. The centre provides access to a school nurse, youth workers, counselling services, doctor, alcohol and drug counselling and other referrals when needed, ensuring every student feels cared for and supported throughout their time at school.

POU ĀRAHI AND WHANAU

Our Pou Ārahi and Whanau Teachers play a vital role in supporting both students and their whānau, building the closest relationships within our school community. They act as the bridge between Putāruru College and our wider community, ensuring every student feels supported and connected. From behavioural guidance and pastoral care to learning support and wellbeing, our staff are here to walk alongside students in every part of their journey. Each year level has a dedicated Pou Ārahi, and your student will be allocated a Whanau Teacher at the beginning of the year. This ensures tailored support and strong, consistent relationships.

All concerns will be handled fairly, respectfully, and in confidence. Our goal is always to support positive outcomes for our students and whānau.
